A proposed amendment to the federal shield law from senators Diane Feinstein and Dick Durbin went up for consideration to the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. The amendment attempts to limit the definition of “journalists” protected by the law, excluding student journalists, amateur bloggers and possibly some freelancers. Many news industry groups are already fighting the bill, which the senators said was created so criminals and terrorists operating under a journalism guise aren’t protected.
