The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Creighton is particularly noted for its state-of-the-art graphics curriculum and its integration of convergence across the curriculum. The department also emphasizes strong writing skills and individual attention to students. Students must complete College of Arts and Sciences core requirements in addition to a department core and one of five tracks. An interdisciplinary graphics design major also is an option. Because students must complete the A&S core, and JMC encourages them to double major or complete at least one minor, major requirements have been limited to less than 40 hours.
The department has about 180 majors in its five tracks and the graphic design program. We accept nearly all students who apply to become majors on the theory that if students can meet the university’s academic standards overall, they can qualify for the department, a practice that is standard at Creighton. Students cannot declare their majors until their sophomore year and most do so then or as first semester juniors. Our five tracks are:
•News
•Public Relations
•Advertising
•Photojournalism
•Digital/New Media and the interdisciplinary Graphic Design major in collaboration with Fine Arts
We publish our award-winning weekly student newspaper, the Creightonian but try to post news online as it happens. Our goal is to become a daily online news service complete with video.
All journalism majors are required to take the following courses: Introduction to Media Technology, News Reporting, Print Design, Web Design, History of American Mass Media, Media Ethics and Law of Mass Communication. They also must complete the requirements for one or more tracks. These can be found on the department’s website at http://www.jmc.creighton.edu along with a complete description of our high tech facilities.
Journalism majors have numerous opportunities for internships. The department also emphasizes faculty advising, career counseling and assistance with placement, and professional ethics. All faculty members have both terminal degrees and professional experience.
As of September 2009, Creighton is an Apple Authorized Training Center.
