The School of Communications at Elon University is home to 900 students majoring in Journalism, Strategic Communications, Media Arts & Entertainment and Communication Science. Elon is one of only 18 private universities in the nation with an accredited communications program. Three times now, Elon's student television newscast has been named #1 in the nation by the Broadcast Education Association. The student newspaper has been a Pacemaker finalist. The School of Communications produces a weekly sports show that airs regionally on ESPN2 and was named the best collegiate sports show in the nation. The school also hosts Live Oak Communications, a student-run communications agency. All students complete a professional internship, and 70% participate in study abroad before they graduate. The school operates an Elon in Los Angeles program for those interested in cinema. Elon also is the home to two centers: the Imagining the Internet Center, which conducts research on the future of the Internet and takes students abroad to the annual Internet Governance Forums, and the North Carolina Sunshine Center, which promotes the importance of open government in a democracy.
