Students take a two-year pre-professional program, focused primarily in the liberal arts and sciences, but including anywhere from 6 to 12 credits of pre-journalism, and then apply for admission to the professional program in the fall of their junior year. Applications are taken only in spring semester (though that will change beginning fall 2010) for fall admission. Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA to apply.
Beginning next year, when our revised curriculum takes effect, all students, regardless of area of interest, will take 12 required credits in pre-journalism. The courses will include 1) Media History and Literacy, 2) Reporting (includes print, broadcast and online), 3) Introduction to Photo, and 4) Introduction to Video. Electives in the pre-jour curriculum will include 1) Current Events, 2) Diversity and the Media, 3) Web and Digital Journalism. Once accepted into the professional program, students take required courses in 1) Media Law, 2) Ethics and Trends in the News Media, and 3) Internship. Beyond that they must select at least 15 credits from among courses in print, broadcast, online or multimedia. All upper-division skills courses will give students the option of producing project work in any of those media.
